Outside In is a travelling group exhibit addressing the impact of cultural difference on contemporary graphic design practice. My goals are twofold: to focus on the role of the outsider as a visual practitioner with heightened sensitivity, and to promote gallery-based graphic design as a legitimate element of professional practice.
One may become an outsider through travel, study abroad, or immigration. One may be born an outsider. It may be a choice; it may be a self-imposed stance. One's outsider status may be evident on the surface; it may be consciously hidden. I'm looking for visual evidence and exploration of various experiences and perspectives on the issue.
How did this come about? It's fundamentally a self-centered endeavor. These are things I've always thought about, even before I considered myself a designer. Over the years, I've met many people who seem to share my experiences and concerns. I think it's time to discuss it openly, using the tools of our training and our practice.
Additionally, the gallery context is one in which graphic design frequently takes a subordinate role. Outside In reverses this situation and brings graphic design into the forefront, activating the "outsider" in the gallery.
