born: Oslo, Norway

travel: Travel has been a part of my life since my parents dragged me through the museums and cathedrals of Europe as a young child. While thinking that the cultural differences in Europe were so marked, I was astonished by two aspects of American culture after moving here; the regional differences, and the similarities between the "tribes" that today make up America. I have lived in Houston, Atlanta, and New England, and through my travels over the continent never cease to be amazed at how I am at once an outsider and integrated in the vast tribal land.

My work relating to border culture attempts to make visual the often invisible boundaries that exist between people. These barriers are often created from complex social dynamics that can easier be described by visual cues. The outsider in this respect, is often a ritualized individual. The border is created between a group and the outsider to preserve the integrity of the group, its norms and social structure. i attempt to trace some of these archetypal barriers, to show that while their evolution is dynamic, their existence is constant.
