resides: Santa Monica, CA, USA I'm usually doing something at the crossroads of my community, the cultural institutions of Los Angeles, and the design profession. I have made a deep commitment to working here. It's where I live at the moment. It all feels larger than the title of "designer", because in this mix I'm a social worker, a public servant, a design advocate, an educator, and most importantly a father. For me graphic design is less of an art and more of a means to an end. When I was grad student at Yale in the late 80s I studied with Mr. Rand, Armin Hofmann, Edward Tufte and Dr. Robert Farris Thompson. Thompson's book "Flash of the Spirit: African and Afro-American Art and Philosophy" changed my life. This is where my interest in "Black" Modernism started. |
